MUST KNOW THINGS ABOUT A NEWBORN SESSION

1. What’s The Ideal Age For A Newborn Studio Session?

There are two answers we want to give you here.... "IDEALLY" the best time for your baby to come into our studio is between 4 - 14 days of age. The reason we say this is because generally babies in this age bracket sleep more, are less sensitive to our touch, settle easier & are more flexible for getting those curly womb like poses.

After 14 days most babies will go through a growth spurt, they will start the cluster feed  so getting them sleepy /  happy requires more patience & time. They are getting used to stretching out their arms & legs so wrapping or posing them is sometimes a little harder.

HOWEVER...... it is so important to remember we are all unique & individual from the very moment we are conceived! Some babies at 3 days are harder to work with than 3 week babies! We at Fifth Season Photography offer newborn sessions up to 8 weeks of age as we are experienced at working with older babies. It required a lot more patience but it can be done!

2. How Far In Advance Should You Book Your Session?

We encourage you to BOOK EARLY!! There are a few reasons for this.... firstly our calendar fills up very fast. As soon as you know you need to have the Fifth Season experience please get yourself secured on our system.

Secondly..... not only is Shannon the sole phototgrapher, she is also the only person who works on turning your images into artwork, she runs all business aspects, personally conducts all Reveal & Ordering sessions. Shannon has a large family with children {home-schooled} who require her time & attention PLUS a husband who also deserves quality time.

Fifth Season Photography is focused on delivering a top quality products & service to all clients... in order to maintain this exceptional service we can only take limited bookings each month. PLUS if you book in prior to 30 weeks into your pregnancy you can take advantage of your COMPLIMENTARY Maternity Connection Session!

3. What If Babies Don’t Arrive On Their Due Dates?

This is one of the most asked questions..... how can we possibly secure a date in the studio when we don't know exactly when the baby is going to come!! Trust me we understand, babies have their own time schedule so we work around this with a booking system that has proven to be very successful for us.

When you secure your booking we make a note of your due date, this allows us to know around that time you will be needing a session. Due to only taking a limited number of bookings this allows us the room to work out an exact date once baby decides to arrive. After baby is born we ask you let us know as soon as possible this allows us the time to work out the best session date  for you.  { we only photograph newborns in the studio Tues, Wed & Thursdays }

4. How Long Does A Session Take?

Very important to know..... we schedule 1 session on our Newborn days, at no time do we want you to feel like we are pushing you out the door to move onto the next client. In order for us to work to our best potential we allow the time to really relax, be patient and enjoy your company. 3 hours are set aside .... from 10.30am to 1.30 pm.... very rarely will a session go this long BUT it is vital for us to allow for it.

Working to what baby needs is the only way to achieve success, if baby is not happy we simply can not make them do anything. We take the time to listen, watch &  we take their cues to enable us to create a comfortable environment for them. We also allow enough time for Family /Parent / Sibling images as well as baby artwork.

5. What Should Your Baby Wear & What Else Should You Bring?

If you have never had a Newborn session experience before it can be so overwhelming to know what to expect or even what to leave the house with.... most of the time this is baby's first outing....We understand how hard that can be with a newborn!!

The best thing to try & keep in mind is dressing baby in something fairly easy to remove, our aim is always to minimise disruption as much as possible. Also try placing the nappy on a little looser than normal to avoid those wrinkles in the skin / red marks.

Our studio is FULL of amazing props sourced from all over the world! Wraps, bonnets, tiny custom clothing, baskets, beds.... oh the things we have here to create will just amaze you! Really the only extra things you need to worry about bringing is a dummy, if bottle fed more than you think you will need & a change of clothes for yourself { yes we sometimes have toilet accidents } We  encourage parents to bring a bottle of water, snacks, even a coffee to be able to sit back and relax while we work our magic.

7. What Do You Do To Make Sure The Baby Is Comfortable?

Our studio is kept nice & warm throughout a session, newborns sometimes struggle to regulate / keep their body temperature especially all the way to their little fingers and toes. Having a heater going not only keeps baby nice & cosy but the fan sound offers a white noise that is calming for them.

We also have our Baby Shusher going throughout the session, this little device is A - MAZING... The Baby Shusher is a revolutionary new tool  using an ancient but doctor-tested and approved technique to help soothe a fussy baby. For more information please visit their website http://www.babyshusher.com.au/

8. How Should You Choose A Photographer?

We could write a whole blog post on this alone & in fact we will BUT until then.... firstly having a clear idea of what YOU want will help you to determine WHO the best photographer for you will be. Stalk them!! Not in a creepy way.... but seriously every place they display their work really look at it all..... make sure they are consistent... make sure they can deliver the quality of work you want over and over again. We would even go as far as checking any testimonials they have to offer.... ask around.... in this day & age with social media its pretty easy to do a bit of a reference check!

Have a clear idea of the level of service you require & your budget... but more importantly understand that sometimes your budget might not match your service expectations..... You might have to be willing to compromise/ spend a little bit more  to get those timeless one a kind art pieces if thats what your heart desires.

Have a clear understanding of who the photographer is, what they promise to deliver to you & what they want you to walk away with from your experience with them. This is a really important time in your life.... its even more important you work with someone who will deliver & exceed your expectations.

9. What Are The Safety Precautions Used During A Session?

Your baby's  comfort & safety is our highest priority.... for this reason we have an assistant to always provide an extra set of hands close to baby while  shooting. We are very mindful of their body language and listen to them,  when they tell us if a particular pose is not one they want to go into we move on to the next pose.

We have invested A LOT of hours & money into learning from some the best in the industry  to ensure we are working effectively & at the highest safety proceedures possible. Understanding how to properly wrap for certain poses, how to set props for maximum stability & always keeping close to baby are key elements to the safety precautions for our studio.

Compositing is vital for a lot of posing with newborns, hands are on baby at all times in this pose.

1O. Which Poses Are Your favourite & how many photographs should we expect?

Discovering & experimenting what makes our creative hearts full of joy is something that we have worked on for a very long time.... perfecting our workflow to have consistent images for every session has truly been a huge learning experience.  There are A LOT of poses when working with newborns.... we have worked on all pretty much all of them so its with confidence now that our workflow  is tried & tested to produce quality galleries time & time again.

Hands down our favourite pose is baby wrapped on the bean bag with parents hands holding baby snug & safe. This portrait is a visual reminder of just how tiny they once were, being protected, loved & held securely by the hands that will guide them through their life.

Of course with all the amazing props we have in the studio it is our aim to provide at least 2 unique prop set ups designed specifically for your session. Family, Parent & Sibling images are always included plus time for us to create in our "happy place" on the bean bag for natural,  less is more images that  highlight babies simple perfection.

Every session is different & designed around YOUR needs, so exact number of images cant be set in stone, however you can rest easy in the knowledge we always aim to give you the best quality, unique artwork possible!
